The origins of capoeira date back to the trade of slaves from Africa, In Brazil these people were sold and traded like cattle and placed in strategically confined compounds in which slaves of different and at times rival tribes were forced to co exist and labor for plantation owners.

Brought together by a common sentiment that of fighting for freedom and resisting the oppression of their cultural identity, differences were put aside and a interchange of traditions and knowledge began to emerge, tribal combat techniques along with ritualistic dances and music began to take form and gave birth to Capoeira a tool for self preservation, expression, and ultimately a means of fighting for ones freedom.

In recent years capoeira has become one of the martial arts that have experience fast growth in popularity and appeal, it is an effective means of self defense and upon seeing it one cannot deny its exotic beauty, rhythmic sound and contagious energy.

"In Capoeira power means nothing without control."
